When driving your car, have you ever felt so tired that you didn’t know if you would make it home or to your intended destination? If not, great! But if so, I’ve been there too! I’ve heard that being sleepy behind the wheel is actually worse than being drunk behind the wheel. If that’s true, then can you spell the word D A N G E R O U S! Today, I want to talk to you about the dangers of falling asleep at the wheel spiritually.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but many Christians across our nation and around the world, are falling away from the faith right now. It’s like the enemy has stepped up his game and is on a rampage for those who are faithfully serving the Lord. No doubt, we are living in dire times. There are all sorts of temptations, distractions, and attractions out there that the enemy is using to try to steal our affection away from God and get us off track from doing His will. Yet the Bible helps us through Colossians 3:2, which states, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” So you see. We have to stay focused, ladies. Whatever God is calling us to do to advance the kingdom of heaven, we must stay awake and accomplish it!

I can recall having a dream recently that I would like to share with you, because I believe it ties to this message today. So here goes…My father-in-law and I were on the road headed somewhere, but along the way, I noticed this woman who was driving next to us. She was lying down on the steering wheel, knocked out. Clearly, she had fallen asleep at the wheel. Immediately, I saw danger ahead for this woman. But as my father-in-law sped up a bit, I watched her car suddenly veer off the road and hit a tree. I was so shocked! Yet, my father-in-law kept driving on. I remember saying, “That woman just hit a tree! Oh my goodness! We have to go back. We have to call the police!” But he said, “We have to keep going. We can’t stop.” I felt so helpless. I called the police, but I couldn’t tell them what road she was on for some reason. And then I woke up.

That dream shook me! When I look back at the dream now, I can see the spiritual implications behind it. She gave up. She couldn’t go any longer, and it appeared as though it caused her demise. How many times have we been driving for a long trip and felt the weariness of the drive hit us like a ton of bricks? Again, I’ve been there. And when that has happened, I've tried slapping myself, coffee, 5 hour energy drinks, music, rolling down the windows, praying, conversation, taking a mini break, or whatever, to try to stay awake to reach my intended destination.

That’s how it is spiritually. We have to fight to make it to our intended destination…heaven! But you better know that there is an enemy that will fight you tooth and nail to get there. That’s why we have to fight to stay sober and alert no matter what life brings. The Bible warns us to stay awake at all costs against the enemy’s tactics. First Peter 5:8-9 says, “Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour. Take a firm stand against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering.” (NLT) We’re all going through this, if we’re trying to serve God.

Remember the Scripture said that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering. You might be saying, "What kind of suffering?" It’s the weariness, doubt, temptations, the lure of being caught up in the lust of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life, or just life’s troubles. In every Christian’s life, there comes a time when you do get tired or weary. Yet, when you find yourself getting tired of going through the tests and trials, your daily routine, or even work, home, or ministry, I encourage you to pull out everything you’ve got to keep the faith and stay on course. Galations 6:9 says, “So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.” (NLT)

Whatever you do, don’t fall asleep and give up. Don’t veer off from what God has called you to do. Don’t stop believing God’s promises. Don’t stop reading your Bible, praying, going to church. No…keep moving and keep expecting God to do great things in your life! I strongly believe the reason why we didn’t go back for the woman, was because she’d already given up, we didn’t know where she was or the state she was in, and it was too late. Don’t do that. Let people know where you are. Reach out and talk to someone (especially God). Again, this is not the time to waver in our faith. Let’s not be like the woman in my dream. We must NOT fall asleep at the wheel! Instead, let’s keep moving forward to reach our intended destination. Others are counting on us to make it. Amen!

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved. So let’s get ready from the Inside Out!
