I’m so glad you decided to click onto this link to read this post. Because inquiring minds want to know…including you. Okay, so let me get right into answering the question, “Is Cursing Okay for Christians?”

No, sis. It’s not okay.

Ephesians 4:29 says, “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” As a child of God, and as His precious daughter, He does not want you to curse. The reason being is because you are living in the light and have given up your former life when you accepted Christ.

Ephesians 4:22-24 reminds us, “…throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on a new nature, created to be like God-truly righteous and holy.”

So this is God’s answer to this question, according to His Word. Let me say this also, it’s not only not Christ-like, but it’s also not lady-like. Think about it. Have you ever heard the expression, “She was pretty…until she opened her mouth!” It’s so unattractive. It’s not appealing to people. But more importantly, it’s ungodly.

The King James Version puts it this way, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” If we’re honest, we know that cursing does not minister to others, nor does it offer grace to the hearers. Instead, it appeases the flesh, pleases the enemy, and tells people a piece of our minds in an explicit way. And that’s not good.

Personally, I used to curse for sport, conversation, and especially when I got angry. But when I started growing in my walk with Christ and was taught what God said about it…that changed my whole perspective on cursing. Once I knew better, I did better. And that should be the same for all of us and with anything.

So choose not to do it, sis. And don’t get caught up in what I call the Christian curse words. Meaning, using words that are in the Bible in an explicit way such as, “Damn, hell, or as_.” Fight the urge or temptation. Don't do it, sis!

WAIT! Another expression that many Christians use is “pissed off.” WHAT?! No ma’am! That is NOT okay. It’s still considered derogatory and carnal. The word cursing actually means, “to utter offensive words in anger or annoyance, a rude or offensive word said about something or someone.” The world uses these expressions every day. And again, it is not ministering grace unto the hearers.

As Christians, we are supposed to be set apart, different, peculiar people, not of this world, foreigners until Christ returns for us, so our lives should look different. First Peter 2:11-12 says, “Dear friends, I warn you as temporary residents and foreigners to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors.”

Let me say this as I prepare to close this post, this is not to put anyone down or point fingers. Because again, I used to do this, until the Holy Spirit showed me otherwise. Yet, the point here is to hopefully shed light on what is being done in Christian circles, homes, conversations, during heated arguments, and even in church and over social media (especially when certain heated topics or opinions arise).

No one should have to flinch or be surprised when you open your mouth to speak, argue, or read one of your social media posts. We are different and the world needs to see the difference, but so do our fellow Christian brothers and sisters. So let’s make a conscious choice, to refrain from cursing. It’s time to shine brighter more now than ever, even in our speech. Love you, sis.

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved. So let’s be ready from the Inside Out!
